Communication and problem-solving game
Decode an objective after the useful context disappears.
Reverse Instructions is an online communication game built around indirect handoffs. A secret harmless objective and banned clue words become a sequence of rewritten instructions, ending with one player who must decide what action or answer the chain was trying to convey.

How to play
Reverse Instructions in five steps.
- 1
Choose an open brief or a supplied everyday, creative, or workplace mission.
- 2
The first player receives the target and banned words, then writes an indirect instruction.
- 3
Each new player sees only the previous handoff and rewrites it for the next person.
- 4
The final handoff must be the shortest useful instruction the chain can produce.
- 5
The last player follows it, then the room reveals the secret objective and every transformation.
Example round
Make tea without saying tea, cup, or brew
“Give dry leaves a very hot bath” may become “Warm the plants,” then “Move the fern into sunlight.” The final answer exposes exactly where useful context vanished.
Best for
Use it when the room needs…
- Communication training
- Process workshops
- Remote team building
- Groups that enjoy decoding clues
Facilitator tips
Keep the chain moving.
- Use server-supplied missions when you want zero preparation.
- After the reveal, identify which handoff lost a constraint or introduced an assumption.
- Keep objectives harmless, observable, and easy to describe in one sentence.
Participation and accessibility
The game uses written instructions rather than physical performance. Final players may describe the action they would take instead of carrying it out.
