Collaborative engineering game

Engineer a machine with one magnificent fatal flaw.

The Team Machine is a collaborative invention game where every rotation adds a new subsystem. The room defines what the machine produces, how it is powered, what moves, how it stays safe, what makes it dangerous, and how anyone could possibly operate it.

How to play

The Team Machine in five steps.

  1. 1

Start The Team Machine and let each player define what one new machine produces.

  2. 2

Rotate the chains so other players add the power source and most important moving part.

  3. 3

    Add one reassuring safety feature.

  4. 4

A new player reveals the dangerous defect and another writes the operating instructions.

  5. 5

Name every machine, then reveal how its parts fit together—or absolutely do not.

Example round

The Auto-Brunch 9000

A machine that prints perfect pancakes runs on motivational speeches, uses a swinging office chair as its main gear, and includes a safety whistle. Its fatal defect is that applause reverses gravity.

Best for

Use it when the room needs…

  • Engineering teams
  • Cross-functional workshops
  • Systems-thinking warmups
  • Creative group challenges

Facilitator tips

Keep the chain moving.

  • Invite each contributor to honor the existing parts before adding a new one.
  • Ask technical teams to distinguish a component, constraint, and failure mode.
  • The dangerous defect should be fictional, playful, and impossible to imitate.

Participation and accessibility

No drawing or technical expertise is required; every subsystem is described in text. The final reveal can be read aloud or reviewed silently.
