How to play
Character Inheritance in five steps.
- 1
Select Character Inheritance and choose the room's genre or tone.
- 2
Each player starts a character with one revealing action.
- 3
The chains rotate while players add a trait, significant item, and important relationship.
- 4
Later contributors give the character a goal and a fear that complicates it.
- 5
The final player writes a short biography before the room meets every completed character.
Example round
A courier who collects unfinished apologies
One action creates a nervous bicycle courier. A brass key, rival astronomer, impossible goal, and fear of open windows arrive from four other players before the biography makes them feel intentional.
Best for
Use it when the room needs…
- Writers' rooms
- Drama classes
- Creative retreats
- Groups that prefer thoughtful play
Facilitator tips
Keep the chain moving.
- Ask for observable details instead of lists of adjectives.
- Let the goal and fear create tension without relying on trauma or stereotypes.
- Choose a genre before starting so unrelated contributions still share a useful frame.
Participation and accessibility
The game is untimed enough for reflective writing and requires no acting. Hosts should keep genres and character prompts inclusive and avoid demanding personal disclosure.
